GTA: San Andreas was something of a technical marvel all those years ago, landing on the PS2 towards the later years of the console's generation.
It's something we've noted for years: the end of a console generation is often when the best games comes out, and Dan Houser agrees.
"Rockstar is a content company, not a hardware company," Houser said in an interview with Famitsu and translated by Polygon, "We use the technology we have to create content, and we try not to let ourselves get beholden to the hardware.
"The fact that hardware's so mature right now is exactly why we're able to go on to the next level."
Despite being impressive when it first released, Houser was still wary of GTA 4's technical limitations "GTA 4 was our first attempt at a new platform and HD visuals, so the first part of development was seriously difficult.
"Now we know what the hardware's capable of," Houser continues, "so it's become a lot easier to move things along and a lot more fun, too."
Houser then uses his own game as an example from the last generation of consoles: "GTA: San Andreas came out at the peak of the PlayStation 2's cycle, and we put out a really good game thanks to that. All the best games for a console come out at the end of the lifecycle, right? So now's the best timing of all."
It's hard to dispute his logic and with the second GTA 5 trailer releasing this afternoon we'll be able to judge the truth of his statement first-hand.
